Quinine, also known as cinchona cream and cinchona, is the main alkaloid in the bark of the Rubiaceae plant cinchona tree and its plants of the same genus. Cinchona bark contains more than 20 kinds of alkaloids. Malaria effects are also quinidine, cinchonine and cinchonidine. All the alkaloids of cinchona bark are used as antimalarials and antipyretics, which are called cinchona whole alkaloids or whole quinine. Quinine belongs to quinoline chemically and is isomer with quinidine. White amorphous powder or crystal, odorless, very bitter taste. The melting point is 172.8°C, and it is optically left-handed. [α]D20-168° (ethanol). Soluble in ethanol, chloroform, benzene, ether, slightly soluble in water. Its dilute sulfuric acid solution has blue fluorescence, and when bromine water and excess ammonia water are added dropwise, it will appear emerald green. Treat cinchona bark powder with lime and sodium hydroxide, extract with kerosene, neutralize with dilute sulfuric acid, react the precipitated quinine sulfate with ammonia. It can also be synthesized from m-hydroxybenzaldehyde and α-aminoacetaldehyde. It is used for the treatment and prevention of various malaria, and its sulfate or hydrochloride is used medicinally.

2. Quinine can inhibit the red blood cell stage of various malaria parasites and control the onset of malaria symptoms.
