Folic acid is an important water-soluble vitamin of the B family. It was isolated from spinach in 1941. It is named for its rich content in green leaves, also known as pteroylglutamic acid. There are several existing forms in nature, and its parent compound is composed of three components: pteridine, p-aminobenzoic acid and glutamic acid. Folic acid contains one or more glutamyl groups, and most naturally occurring folic acid is in the form of polyglutamic acid. The biologically active form of folic acid is tetrahydrofolate.
